The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Big things are happening for SOKAMBA. In the midst of planning these changes, we stumbled upon a company plan from the first ever SOKAMBA meeting back in 2013. Back then, we were just college undergrads scrambling from apartments to empty gymnasiums in order to jam together in our various art forms. Although finding studio space is still a bit of a struggle, our little college friend group has expanded into a flourishing artist community. Now, five shows and countless art jams later, we are moving onto a new phase.

Finding this original company plan was such a heartwarming trip down memory lane. For as much as we’ve grown, it’s comforting to be reminded that we’re still rooted in our initial spirit. The document was titled “SOKAMBA Dance Company: Let Yourself Be Free,” and ended with the following excerpt:

Our goal is
- to let the audience set themselves free and to not let manufactured societal influences dominate their spirit (to be alive)
- to encourage the appreciation of individuality, originality, universal human struggles (to embrace your own weird beauty)
- to inspire a greater sense of community (more touch, more love, more sharing of fears)

Live in love,

SOKAMBA
