A movement, a moment—a fleeting phrase to remind you of where you began and who you’ve become. On September 14th, 2017 we invite you to an intimate exhibition of song, dance, and narrative crafted by Naked Narratives and Sokamba Performing Arts Company, inspired by Elizabeth Montagu. The founder of the first feminist writing salon, Montagu’s Bluestockings Society paved the way for femme-identified poets and authors alike. Continuing this tradition, since 2014 Naked Narratives has hosted feminist coteries across the globe, using storytelling to uplift and empower marginalized voices. Featuring narrators from its most recent program with the /FIVE Arts Initiative at The Huntington Library, Naked Narratives is collaborating with the Sokamba Performing Arts Company to create an exclusive evening performance in which fifteen queer, femme poets, musicians, and dancers of color will share their stories. Engaging with themes rooted in the body and the human experience, this sensory showcase will add identity and instinct to the discourse of The Montagu Collection. Celebrating the beauty of all our hard-earned lessons and paying homage to the ones that taught them to us.

This year’s STATE OF THE ARTS 2016: A.I. and for Good and Music that Transforms, presented by The c3: Center for Conscious Creativity and The Millennium Project with Brink Institute, focuses on the power of artificial (or machine) intelligence and music to transform our lives. From personal wellbeing, to education, arts and healing, this year’s event will honor both 2016 FutureVision Awardees; inventor of iWithin, Eric Shuss, and musician and composer, Ricky Kej.
Many stories in our media and entertainment paint a dystopic view of A.I. With fear and trepidation around the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI.) and the even more powerful thinking and learning Artificial General Intelligence (A.G.I.), we will explore a future where A.I. becomes a force for good, and helps integrate with humanity to make this world and our next worlds, a better place.
The evening will culminate in the presentation of the annual c3 FutureVision Awards preceded by a presentation and short film by FutureVision Awardee musician Ricky Kej, a Grammy-nominated composer and creator of Shanti Samsara: World Music for Environmental Consciousness. SOKAMBA's choreography and dance performance will be presented in ROBOT PRAYERS - an evolving 360 immersive fulldome and VR piece created by c3 AIR: visual artist, Audri Phillip, composer/musician, Winter Lazerus and choreographer/dancer Caribay Franke, with collaborative support from producer, Kate McCallum.
Please join us on Thursday, July 14th as we examine the art of Performance at the Art Walk Lounge where SOKAMBA will be featured through music, visuals, dance and spoken word.
By blending the physical with the visual, performance art occupies a unique, and often misunderstood position within the ever changing art world. Consisting generally of four elements - time, space, the performer's body, and a relationship between the audience and the performer, this form of art has traditionally elicited strong, and often personal responses from those who watch such performances. At our upcoming July 14th event, the Downtown Art Walk team will be closely examining this dynamic in an incredible pres...entation of work that includes interpretative photography, live dance performances, and portraiture inspired by the photographic subject-object interchange.
Come join SOKAMBA at the Vortex Dome LA located at the LA Center Studios for an evening of innovative Performances. SOKAMBA will be premiering a new dance work in collaboration with the incredible animation master Audri Phillips. LA Center Studios is the production home for several television series and feature films such as; Mad Men, The Voice, Die Hard, The Dark Knight Rises, Law & Order LA. Come join the fun!

Sokamba Performing Arts Company’s newest show explores the question: what memories, thoughts, and feelings will we hold on to in the end?
Thereafter dives into the mind of a young woman who is dying suddenly. Her final moment of consciousness stretches across the entire show, and the audience is taken through a journey of her memories: the important, the unimportant, the emotional, the mundane, the beautiful, and the destructive.
Sokamba Performing Arts Company is a group of young artists from different backgrounds who collaborate to create a cohesive and beautiful artistic experience. With Thereafter, Sokamba's signature synthesis of music, dance, film, and spoken word creates an expansive, organic, and colorful performance that immerses the audience in an exploration of the significance of life.
This season, SOKAMBA explores the universal ripple effect of encounters: from forces of nature to artistic collisions to everyday personal relationships, we leave physical and mental fingerprints with our every observation. Like gazing out at ancient galaxies, tiny actions fuel time's progression and connect the totality of existence - to encounter anything and anyone is to participate in this all-encompassing cosmic echo of interaction.
SOKAMBA's premier show ROOTS:
An exploration of human connections.
